VAPT checklist for Jabalpur businesses: protecting client data from ransomware

VAPT checklist for Jabalpur businesses: protecting client data from ransomware

Schools, accounting firms, clinics and hospitals across Jabalpur now keep student records, client books and patient files on computers and shared drives. That makes daily work faster — and it also makes the office network a target. Ransomware rarely needs a sophisticated attack: an unpatched router or a carelessly opened port is often enough.

What VAPT means

Vulnerability Assessment is a systematic scan of your network, computers and connected devices to find known weaknesses — outdated firmware, default passwords, missing updates and exposed services. Penetration Testing goes a step further and checks, in a controlled way, whether those weaknesses could actually be used to get in. Together they show you what to fix first.

A practical checklist for small offices

  • Update router and firewall firmware. Internet routers are often installed once and never updated. Check for firmware updates and replace devices that no longer receive them.
  • Review port forwarding. Remote desktop, file shares, CCTV recorders and accounting servers should not be opened directly to the internet. Close forwarded ports you do not need and use a secure remote-access method for the rest.
  • Change default passwords on routers, Wi-Fi access points, printers and DVR/NVR recorders, and use a separate guest Wi-Fi for visitors.
  • Keep Windows and antivirus updated on every workstation, including the old PC in the corner that "only runs billing".
  • Back up regularly and keep one copy offline. A backup that is permanently connected to the network can be encrypted along with everything else.
  • Limit administrator rights so everyday user accounts cannot install software or change system settings.
  • Train staff to recognise suspicious email attachments and links — still the most common way ransomware gets in.

Make it a routine, not a one-off

New devices are added, software changes and new vulnerabilities are published all the time, so a network that was safe last year may not be safe today. Regular assessment keeps the list of risks short and manageable.

Network upkeep, firewall filtering, antivirus updates and scheduled backups are also part of our corporate AMC plans. To discuss a VAPT review for your office, school or clinic, contact our team in Wright Town.
