A UPS only protects your computers if its battery is healthy. Most desktop and commercial UPS units use sealed 12V SMF (sealed maintenance-free) batteries, and how the UPS is used and looked after has a big effect on how long those batteries last.
Simple habits that extend battery life
- Clean oxidised terminals. White or green deposits on battery terminals increase resistance, so the battery cannot deliver its full power. With the UPS switched off and unplugged, cleaning the terminals and tightening the connections restores a good contact.
- Run a periodic discharge cycle. A battery that is only ever kept on float charge is never exercised. Running the UPS on battery from time to time, under normal load, tests the backup time and keeps the battery working.
- Avoid continuous overload. Connect only what needs backup — the computer, monitor and network equipment. Heavy loads such as laser printers, heaters or kettles strain the UPS and drain the battery quickly.
- Keep it cool and ventilated. Heat is one of the main causes of early battery failure. Keep the UPS away from direct sunlight and do not block its vents.
When to replace the battery
Even a well-maintained SMF battery eventually wears out. Signs that it is time to replace it include:
- Backup time is much shorter than it used to be.
- The UPS beeps or shows a battery warning soon after a power cut.
- The battery case is swollen, leaking or unusually hot.
- The computer switches off as soon as the mains supply drops.
Replacing a weak battery promptly protects your computers and data from sudden shutdowns. If you are not sure whether the battery or the UPS itself is the problem, a battery test will tell you.
Bring your UPS to our Wright Town workshop or ask for a doorstep visit, and our technicians will test the battery and the unit.
