Monochrome laser printers like the HP LaserJet and ink-tank printers like the Epson EcoTank are the two most common choices for small offices, clinics and shops. Both can be economical to run — but they suit very different kinds of printing.
Cost per page
Both types are far cheaper to run than ink-cartridge inkjets. Laser printers become especially economical when the toner cartridge is refilled properly instead of being replaced, and an ink-tank is topped up from bottles. The real difference comes from what you print and how often.
Refilling
Laser cartridges can be refilled many times if it is done correctly: the waste hopper emptied, the rollers cleaned and good-quality toner used. Cheap refills with coarse powder lead to leaks, grey streaks and toner burned onto the fuser. Ink-tanks are simple to refill yourself, but using the wrong ink can damage the printhead.
Paper jams
Jams on laser printers usually come from worn pickup rollers or separation pads, which are inexpensive to replace. Ink-tank printers jam less often but are more sensitive to damp or curled paper.
Printhead durability
This is where the two differ most. Laser toner is a dry powder and does not dry out, so a laser printer can sit unused for weeks and print perfectly. Ink-tank printheads can clog if the printer is not used regularly, and a badly clogged head needs a flush or replacement.
Which should you choose?
- Choose a LaserJet for high volumes of black-and-white text — invoices, reports, prescriptions — and for printers that may sit idle between busy days.
- Choose an ink-tank if you need colour and print regularly enough to keep the printhead healthy.
Whichever you use, our Wright Town workshop refills laser cartridges in about 15 minutes, replaces drums and rollers, and flushes clogged ink-tank printheads. Doorstep pickup is available for offices.
